KUCHING: The 14 contingents taking part in the 21st Inter-state Library Sport Carnival held in the city this weekend got to laugh for an hour with famous Malaysian stand-up comedian Harith Iskandar.

Harith entertained the audience with stage jokes and shared his life experiences as an entertainer and actor after captivating them with stories on his life and family background.

After getting a degree in Mass Communication in Journalism and Broadcasting from Western Australia University, Harith returned to work for an advertising company for three years.

“I did not like my advertising job much and I looked for a change in career,” he confessed when conducting a seminar on ‘Stand Up Libraries’ organised by the state libraty here yesterday.

“I met someone in the entertainment industry in the mid 1990’s and I got hooked as a stand up comedian at a corporate dinner. The rest is history.”

Harith said he learned to fine-tune his act as a stand-up comedian by watching video and books bought by friends who went abroad.

He said it was not easy to be a comedian as the audience had to respond to you and interact.

On how to get people to go to the library, Harith believe that that people who use the library frequently can influence others to do the same.

He was given a surprise birthday cake presented by the state library.

Also present were State Library CEO Rashidah Bolhassan and a member of the state library board, Dr Abdul Rahman Deen.
